University of Louisville

The Department of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. The General Education Requirements are determined by the College of Arts and Sciences, whereas the requirements in psychology and certain electives are determined by the Psychology Department. What follows is a description of the process for declaring a major in psychology, its subprograms, advising, and a number of pieces of information that are useful for psychology majors.

In order be accepted as a major in Psychology, a student must achieve a minimum program grade point average of 2.00, both overall and in the Department of Psychology. On attainment of the minimum requirements, a student applies for admission to the Department by completing an application for major card in the Arts and Sciences Advising Center, which is currently located in Gardiner Hall. New transfer students are advised to wait to apply until after completion of a semester of study at U of L (including at least one course in Psychology). The Advising Center will then prepare an evaluation and review it in relation to requirements set up by the Psychology Department. The student is notified by mail of acceptance or rejection and provided a copy of the credit evaluation. This process takes about 4-6 weeks. After being accepted into the Psychology Department, a student is advised by the Psychology Department.

The Psychology Department offers two different subprograms leading to the B.A. Both programs have the same core psychology requirements but differ in the areas in which the majority of the non-psychology requirements are taken. One option is the Social Sciences option in which many of the non-psychology electives are taken in the social sciences such as Anthropology, Communication, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Justice Administration, Pan African Studies*, Social Sciences, Sociology, and Women's Studies.* In the Natural Sciences option, many of the classes outside of the major are taken in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, and Physics. Thus students can choose the option that would be most beneficial to their career plans.
