| The University of Kentucky College of Allied Health Professions offers a bridge
program for clinical laboratory technicians interested in completing a Bachelor of
Health Sciences degree in Clinical Laboratory
Sciences.
What is the CLT-CLS bridge program? The CLT-CLS bridge program is a non-traditional course sequence designed for CLTs who want to complete the Bachelor of Health Sciences degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences. This is a distance education program, which means that courses may be completed at your home site. Starting in 2002, the didactic portion of courses will be available by internet. Short laboratory experiences are required at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Courses build on the knowledge and skills you already have and emphasize problem-solving, quality assurance issues, and advanced technical skills. Upon completion of the degree requirements, you will be eligible to sit for MT(ASCP) and CLS(NCA) examinations. Who can apply? The degree program is open to all Clinical Laboratory Technicians with an associates degree in the field. Those who prefer to take courses for review or for continuing education may apply as non-degree students and take any course with the permission of the course instructor. What courses are required? The degree program consists of three parts: 1) University Studies Program (USP) which is required for all UK students, 2) pre-professional requirements which are required of all pre-CLS students, and 3) CLS professional courses. You must complete USP and pre-professional requirements before admission into the CLS professional program. Do I have to do clinical rotations? Students may request exemptions from clinical practica based on their work experience. When clinical rotations are required, they are individually arranged for each student and the credit hours will vary by the amount of time needed to complete the rotation requirements. Optional experiences are available in special laboratories, such as DNA testing, bone marrow processing, and cytogenetics. There is also an exchange program with the University of Wolverhampton in England which provides opportunities for international experience. How long does it take? The bridge program is a part time program designed for working laboratorians. Most students take 3 years to complete all pre-requisite and CLS courses, although it is possible to complete requirements in a shorter time period. How much does it cost? Students pay UK tuition as determined by the Council on Higher Education. In-state tuition is approximately $130 per semester hour. Financial aid is available and many employers will pay some tuition costs. How do I get more information? Contact Jean Brickell, Distance Learning Coordinator at the UK Center for Rural
