Prestonsburg Community College

Associate Degree Nursing Program

The Associate in Applied Science Degree Nursing Program is designed primarily for persons interested in direct patient care. It is a college oriented basic Nursing Program for general nursing positions in hospitals and other health agencies. Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate will receive the Associate in Applied Science Degree. The Kentucky Board of Nursing will then determine the graduate’s eligibility to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). Enrollment in the Associate Degree Nursing Program is selective and may be limited because of available laboratory facilities in the community, as well as limited faculty and financial resources at the community college.

bulletStudents interested in applying for the Nursing Program must attend a Pre-Admission Nursing Conference each admission cycle (one time per year). A Nursing application, indicating the student’s desire to be considered for admission into the Nursing Programs, must be completed at this conference. If a student is not admitted into the Nursing Program and desires to be considered again, they must attend another Pre-Admission Nursing Conference and complete a new Nursing Application as these are not retained from one admission cycle to the next. Admissions into the Nursing Program are not based on a "waiting list".
bulletPreference may be given to candidates who demonstrate above average standing in high school or on the General Education Development Examination (GED).
bulletPreference will be given to applicants with a National ACT composite standard score of 20.
bulletPreference will be given to applicants who have completed 12 or more credit hours in the approved curriculum with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better from any regionally accredited college.
bulletStudents applying or admitted to the Nursing Program must complete the ASSET Reading Test, which will be administered after each Pre-Admission Nursing Conference. Students with a deficiency in reading must enroll in, and successfully complete RDG 030, Reading Laboratory, prior to entering the Nursing Program. Failure to comply forfeits the student’s right to enter the Nursing Program.
bulletPreferences will be given to Kentucky residents and applicants within the Community College Service Area.
bulletWhen you have completed the above steps, your application will be reviewed by the Nursing Admission Advisory Committee after the March 1 deadline. Upon admission to the Nursing Program, you must complete registration for classes as scheduled or forfeit your right to enter the nursing class.

Pre-Nursing Students

Any student may enroll in courses required in the Nursing Curriculum (except NSG courses) before formal entry into the program. Pre-Nursing students should request to be assigned a member of the nursing faculty as an advisor to assist in advising and schedule planning.
