Associate of Applied Science in Nursing

The curriculum of the associate degree program (ADN) is based on concepts and theories of nursing, liberal arts, and the sciences. The nursing process is incorporated throughout the curriculum. Carefully planned clinical experiences are an integral part of each nursing course, beginning in the first semester and continuing throughout the two years.  Graduates are awarded the degree of Associate of Applied Science in Nursing and are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses and to continue their education at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels.

Graduates of the program are prepared to function as a provider of care, a manager of care, and a member of the discipline of nursing. They use critical thinking, communication, and technical skills in providing care to individuals and families.

Accreditation

The program is approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing and is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission.

Pre-Major and Selective Admission Requirements

Students enrolled in the University may declare pre-nursing associate as t heir major upon completion of all required developmental course work. Students majoring in pre-nursing will be advised by a member of the nursing faculty to help them develop a plan for nursing education at NKU. Pre-nursing students may enroll in courses that fulfill pre-admission requirements and general studies and/or in support courses required for the associate degree nursing program. However, students must be admitted to the associate degree nursing program I order to take courses in nursing.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the associate degree program is selective. Applicants with the highest qualifications and who apply by 31 January will have priority consideration for admission. Applications submitted after 31 January will be considered until the class is filled.

Applicants wishing to be considered for admission must:

bulletBe admitted to NKU without restrictions;
bulletSubmit an associate degree nursing program application
bulletSubmit official transcripts indicating completion of high school or equivalent (GED)
bulletSubmit evidence of completion of high school biology and chemistry (or college equivalent) with a grade of "C" or better;’
bulletMeet university pre-college requirements
bulletSubmit transcripts of all prior college work and nursing courses taken, if applicable;
bulletAchieve a minimum composite of 20 on the ACT or a college/university GPA of at least 2.30 for a minimum of 24 semester hours completed at an accredited institution;
bulletSubmit evidence of a GPA of at least 2.3 for all college/university courses completed.

Three Year Track

Admitted students may choose to complete the program of student for the Associate in Applied Science in Nursing in three years. Three-year track students must complete 24 semester hours at NKU during fall and spring semesters of the first year. A grade of "C" or higher in natural sciences and a GPA of at least 2.3 must be achieved to continue in the program.

Program of Study

Students must fulfill all requirements for the 72-semester hour associate degree program including required general studies courses, support courses and nursing courses.
