Pharmacy Technician

Program Description

The Pharmacy Technician program provides the student with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform in various capacities in a pharmacy setting. The students complete an externship where they will work directly under the

supervision of a pharmacist in a pharmacy setting.

Nature of Work

Pharmacy technicians are allied health specialists employed in pharmacies. They perform a variety of technical duties related to preparing and dispensing drugs in accordance with standard procedures and laws while under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Pharmacy technicians are trained to transcribe physicians, medication orders, fill orders to be checked by the pharmacists, and deliver them. They prepare admixtures of intravenous solutions, replenish drugs, maintain patient profile records, and prepare bulk formulations.

Employment Opportunities

The Pharmacy Technician program prepares students for positions in hospital environments, medical clinics, health-care centers, nursing homes, retail drugstores, drug companies, and Health Maintenance Organizations.
