Murray State University

The Doctor of Optometry degree is offered only by professional schools similar in mission to medical schools. There are no such schools in the state of Kentucky. The state does, however, contract positions for Kentucky resident students as follows; University of Indiana, College of Optometry (4); University of Alabama, College of Optometry (3); Southern College of Optometry, a private school in Memphis, but not associated with Memphis State University (8). These contract positions are essentially "reserved slots" for which Kentucky also pays out-of-state tuition.

Each of these schools maintains similar entry requirements. They include a minimum of one year of mathematics, physics, and English; two years of chemistry and biology; social studies, psychology, etc. None of these presently requires a bachelor's degree. However, the majority of students now admitted do, in fact, have at least three years of undergraduate work completed. Students should, therefore, seriously consider following a pre-optometry curriculum which, in addition to fulfilling professional school requirement, will lead toward a degree (with major, minor, general education, and electives).

The Murray State University Department of Physics and Engineering offers a Pre-Optometry program. Our strength in this program is the maintenance of current standards of the professional schools and the profession, thus ensuring that students are properly advised to enhance postgraduate success. Our student record of successful completion of the Doctor of Optometry program is truly outstanding.
