Murray State University

Murray State University offers a Bachelor of Science degree in the area of medical technology. The purpose of the program is to graduate highly trained technologists qualified to sit for the national examination offered by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). Upon achieving the MT(ASCP) certification, the graduate may be employed in hospitals, reference laboratories, industry, government health agencies, and veterinary clinics. The medical technologist may, with experience, become a laboratory manager. The medical technologist may also choose to become a teacher or a director in one of the numerous hospital-based schools of medical technology located throughout the US. Medical technologists are most commonly employed in a hospital setting where they are an essential part of the health care team.

Murray State University offers a "3+1" curriculum of study which culminates in a B.S. degree with an area in medical technology. The first three years of the program are spent in residence at the university, taking courses from the suggested curriculum. These courses are chosen to (1) fulfill university general education requirements for a B.S. degree and (2) prepare the student for entrance and study in the clinical year of the program. The fourth clinical year of the program is spent at a hospital-based program affiliated with the university. Murray State is currently affiliated with six hospitals located in three states in this region. Following completion of the clinical year, 36 hours are transferred to the university enabling the student to graduate with a B.S. degree. The student is then qualified to sit for the national registry exam previously mentioned.

Applications for admission to the "university phase" of this program are accepted from high school graduates and from students with satisfactory academic records who wish to transfer from other accredited colleges and universities. However, admission to the "hospital phase" is competitive and requires a separate application. At MSU, the student simply declares a major in medical technology. All students in this program should be under the advisement of the medical technology advisor by the start of their junior year. This is important in order for the student to be advised of procedures and admission requirements of the hospital affiliate of choice.
