The Surgical Technologist is trained to perform specific functions in the operating room and is a vital member of the surgical team under the direct supervision of a doctor or registered nurse in the operating room, delivery room, or emergency room. The duties include preparing the operating room with instruments, equipment, sterile linens, and fluids that will be used during an operation; preparing patients for surgery or delivery; passing sterile instruments during surgery and holding retractors; cutting sutures, and counting items used during the operation; assisting with circulation duties; and cleaning and maintaining the operating room and environment.
