| Pre-Physical Therapy
Curriculum Kentucky Wesleyan College offers the pre-professional preparation for students seeking admission to a physical therapy program. At the conclusion of a minimum of two successful years at KWC, students are prepared to enroll in a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or Masters of Science (M.S.) degree program in physical therapy at a university offering such a degree. The pre-physical therapy program at Kentucky Wesleyan College consists of two academic years of course work in which students accumulate a minimum of 64 semester credit hours. The science curriculum consists of two courses in each of the areas of chemistry, biology and physics. Physical education activities are kinesiology are highly recommended. The remainder of the curriculum includes electives chosen to fulfill degree requirements of the university awarding the degree in physical therapy. Preparing for Physical Therapy Program Admission Most universities offering B.S. or M.S. programs in physical therapy have a common core of course required for admission, and most, if not all, readily accept qualified transfer students from schools such as Kentucky Wesleyan. KWC’s pre-physical therapy advisor provides the student with information and entrance criteria for degree completion programs at a variety of universities: students are also encouraged to seek information on their own. After a KWC pre-physical therapy student selects two or three universities at which future enrollment is preferred, the student and her/his KWC faculty advisor design a specific curriculum at Kentucky Wesleyan College to prepare for the programs entrance and graduation requirements. Early in a KWC pre-physical therapy student’s fourth semester, the student begins making application to universities with B.S. or M.S. programs in physical therapy. Admission to any professional physical therapy program is highly competitive. Students accepted into these programs typically have college grade point averages over 3.2 and pre-college ACT scores of 23 and higher. Other criteria considered in the professional school admission process include personal interviews and volunteer experience in physical therapy. Student Success KWC strives to make its pre-physical therapy students exceptionally competitive for professional school admission. Each pre-physical therapy student at KWC is advised individually. Depending upon the particular circumstances, the faculty advisor may recommend that the student modify her/his curriculum to include three years of pre-professional study at KWC. Such students are encouraged to select a major (usually biology, chemistry or psychology) to focus their studies and enable them to complete a KWC degree in four years in case they are not admitted to the professional program. In the past few years, KWC pre-physical therapy students have enrolled in the physical therapy programs at the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville and the University of Evansville. Several graduates are currently employed in the physical therapy departments in a number of major hospitals. |
