| Pre-Pharmacy
Kentucky Wesleyan College offers a program which prepares students for admission to any college of pharmacy. Although requirements vary slightly from one college to another, the basic science courses are consistent. The pre-pharmacy advisor at Kentucky Wesleyan College provides the student with information and entrance requirements for all colleges accredited by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. When the student decides on the college of pharmacy to which to apply, the advisor designs a specific academic program to fulfill the admission requirement of that college. Curriculum The pre-pharmacy program consists of a minimum of two academic years of course work during which the student must accumulate a minimum of 66 semester hours. The science courses include two years of chemistry, four semesters of biology and one year of physics. The remainder of the curriculum consists of courses which must be chosen in order to fulfill general education requirements of the college of pharmacy which the student wishes to attend. Typically, pharmacy schools accept a majority of students who have three to four years of pre-pharmacy preparation. It may be necessary for a student to do a minimum three-year pre-pharmacy program (or two academic years plus summers) in order to fulfill all requirements, particularly if the student does not have two years of high school foreign language courses and is not prepared to enroll in Calculus I. A suggested pre-pharmacy curriculum includes an optional third year if the student needs this to fulfill the admission requirements of a particular pharmacy school. Several Kentucky Wesleyan College students received degrees in chemistry or biology prior to entering a college of pharmacy. Preparation for Pharmacy School Admission In the second year of the program, the student should take Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) unless the student is following a three-year program in which case the test must be taken no later than the fall semester of the third year. A good academic record and an acceptable performance on the PCAT are important in gaining admission to pharmacy school. Kentucky Wesleyan students have been accepted by such colleges as the University of Kentucky, Mercer University in Atlanta, Georgia; and Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. Kentucky Wesleyan College graduates from these programs are currently employed by both small private and large chain pharmacies, home health agencies, pharmaceutical companies, medical centers and colleges of pharmacies. High School Preparation A strong college preparatory program, with emphasis on science and mathematics is expected, as are above-average college entrance examinations. Most pre-pharmacy students at Kentucky Wesleyan College are recipients of academic scholarships. Applicants are encouraged to seek additional scholarship and financial aid information from the Admission Office and to compete in the college’s extensive academic scholarship program if eligible. |
