Kentucky Wesleyan College

Medical Technology

Kentucky Wesleyan College offers the B.S. and B.A. degrees in the area of medical technology. This program is officially affiliated with the Owensboro Mercy Health System School of Medical Technology and the University of Louisville.

On-Campus and Off-Campus Study

Students majoring in this area study three years on the Kentucky Wesleyan College campus, taking a program which is oriented in chemistry and biology yet includes all the course in social sciences and humanities required for all degree candidates. During the fourth year (a full twelve months) the student takes courses in medical technology in Owensboro or Louisville at one of the affiliated schools previously mentioned. However, students may elect to complete their training at other schools of medical technology which are accredited by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist. If a school other than one affiliated with Kentucky Wesleyan College is preferred, the student should consult the Kentucky Wesleyan College medical technology advisor.

Earning the Degree and becoming Certified

After satisfactory completion of the four-year program, the student receives a B.A. or B.S. degree from Kentucky Wesleyan College and a Certificate of Medical Technology from the school of medical technology which she/he attended. Upon completion of the degree and initial certification, the student may take the Registry of Medical Technologists and become certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

Students have the option of receiving a B.A. or B.S. degree in one of the basic sciences, such as chemistry or biology, from Kentucky Wesleyan College prior to enrolling in a medical technology program.

Kentucky Wesleyan College graduates in this program are currently working in laboratories in many hospitals, physicians’ offices and regional blood banks. Some have become directors in their respective laboratories.

High School Preparation

A strong college preparatory curriculum emphasizing the sciences and mathematics is expected, as are above-average college entrance examination scores.
