Pre-Medicine

Selecting the Major

Students in pre-medical studies at Kentucky Wesleyan College may select any academic area for their major. Most pre-medical students at Kentucky Wesleyan College have chosen to major in chemistry or biology or have chosen double majors in these two areas. Those selecting these majors fulfill the academic requirements for medical schools upon the completion of the B.A. or B.S. degree.

Curriculum

The specific program which the pre-medical chemistry or biology major follows is partially dependent on the student’s academic record in high school and preference for earning a B.A. or B.S. degree. Students with sound preparation in mathematics are advised to take calculus in the first semester, whereas others may need a semester of college algebra and trigonometry. Course requirements in foreign languages depend on the students’ records in foreign languages in high school and their choice of degree. A number of electives are included so the student can choose additional course work in humanities or social sciences.

Preparation for Medical School

The student is also advised by the Pre-Medical and Allied Health Committee. The Committee assists students in program planning and the gathering of information from various professional schools. The Committee provides recommendations upon student request. Kentucky Wesleyan students have experienced exceptionally good success in being admitted to medical schools such as the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville, the University of Cincinnati, Indiana University, Ohio State University and the State Medical College of Georgia.

Scholarship/Assistantships

Most chemistry and biology majors at Kentucky Wesleyan are recipients of academic scholarships and assistantships. They serve the departments as assistants in the laboratories, classrooms and offices. This fulfills an important role in the departments and provides a valuable learning experience for the student. All pre-medical students are encouraged to participate in this program.
