| The Occupational Therapy Assistant program is designed to educate
prospective professionals in the art and science of promoting and maintaining
the holistic health of individuals in the community. Such workers serve members
of the community, under the supervision of a registered professional Occupational Therapist (OTR), to restore or develop their ability to perform
the functional living skills necessary for adaptation and productivity. The
program strives to fill a growing need for professionals able to contribute to all
facets of occupational therapy, from assessment to treatment termination.
A basic background in natural sciences, mathematics, communication, and behavioral sciences undergirds the specialized course work. Specialized course work prepares students for the certification examination to become Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants. Employment may be in hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes, clinics, and other health care facilities, as well as within pediatric or educational settings. Enrollment in this program is limited; therefore, a selective admissions process is followed (for information on admission guidelines, please contact the Admissions Office). Students enrolled in the Occupational Therapy Assistant program must achieve a minimum grade of "C" in each Occupational Therapy Assistant Course. It is also an American Occupational Therapy Association policy that all Level II fieldwork be completed within 18 months of completion of academic preparation. Program accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education is pending. |
