Medical Assistant Program

This program prepares students for entry into the Medical Assistant field and related occupations. They learn to perform business duties consistent with the medical office environment including medical transcription, insurance coding, billing, computer applications for word processing and database management, office reception, and patient scheduling functions. They also learn patient care related skills such as application of universal precautions, sterilization and care of medical instruments, First Aid and CPR, disease prevention strategies, nutrition, basic laboratory skills including phlebotomy, and preparing/administering of medication. The curriculum combines general education and medical assistant classes with practical experience gained in the physicians’ offices and clinical facilities.

The curriculum provides the basics in theory, principles and techniques utilized by persons in the medical assistant field. The potential student must provide the desire to serve others and demonstrate the highest degree of integrity, honesty, confidentiality, and responsibility.

The degree of Associate in Applied Sciences in awarded upon completion of the program and the graduate is eligible to sit for a national examination to become a certified medical assistant.

Graduates work in physician offices, medical clinics, public health agencies, and hospitals.

How to Apply

To be considered for admission to the Medical Assistant Program, each applicant must submit:

bulletOfficial* transcripts of previous college education

In addition, each applicant must attend a Medical Assistant Program advising conference with the program coordinator.

Preference may be given to those applicants who complete the admissions process by March 1 and to applicants with the following credentials:

bulletApplicants with an ACT enhanced composite standard score of 19 or above or the equivalent
bulletApplicants who rank in the upper half of their graduating class or have an average score of 50 or above on the GED
bulletApplicants who submit evidence of successful completion of developmental coursework and/or those who have an accumulative GPA of 2.5 or better in 12 or more credit hours of college work including at least one science course
bulletApplicants who are Kentucky residents or live within the HCC service area
