| Recreational Therapist
B.S. Degree in Recreation and Park Administration (4-year degree) Curriculum Option Titled: Therapeutic Recreation Student earns a B.S. Degree with a specialty in Therapeutic Recreation. No special requirements. Students sit for the Certified Therapeutic Recreation specialist examination upon graduation. The therapeutic recreation curriculum option in our Department is nationally accredited. It is the only one accredited in the Commonwealth! Program description and career areas: Therapeutic recreation majors take a series of classroom courses designed to prepare them for careers in recreation therapy upon graduation. Courses include units of instruction related to the study of persons with specific illnesses and limitations for leisure participation, the development of recreation and leisure programs that serve as an intervention for persons with special leisure needs. Treatment plans, evaluation and assessment of programs, and documentation (progress notes and assessments) are very important components of a recreation therapist's daily job tasks. Recreation therapists are active members of treatment teams within the job setting. Students complete two (2) field work courses in the early stages of their curriculum. They subsequently complete a senior practicum under the supervision of a CTRS. Students are employed by hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, outdoor residential treatment centers, large municipal parks and recreation departments, and senior citizen corporations.
