Emergency Medical Technician

This information is designed to give you a general overview of required courses and will allow you some idea of the general time span for each of the various options. The options include the following:

 

bulletThe Associate of Science Degree

    This degree is for the student who may or may not already be an EMT and desires to become a paramedic. This option does require some general education course work and will require at least 2 years including one full summer to complete. You may enter this option as a high school graduate without any prior experience. Successful completion will allow eligibility to sit for National Registry of EMT-P board examination.

bulletEmergency Medical Technician Certification

    This option is for the student who desires to be an EMT-B (Emergency Medical Technician – Basic). This requires 7 credit hours taken in one semester. Successful completion allows eligibility to sit NREMT board examination. No prior experience required.

bulletMinor in Emergency Medical Care

    This option is for the student who is already enrolled in EKU and chooses to declare a minor in EMC. Successful completion grants adequate credit hours to fulfill a minor and the student will be eligible to sit NREMT-B board examination. No prior experience required.

bulletDegree Completion Program

This option is for the licensed National Registry paramedic that desires a degree. Credit may be earned through current licensure, certifications and demonstrated competencies. An advising appointment or discussion with an advisor is recommended to facilitate understanding of this option.

This option may be started by incoming freshmen students, or may be attained by previous students or paramedics desiring degree completion. Two (2) options are available.

bulletBaccalaureate Degree
bulletClinical / Fire Science Track: For the student who desires placement as a director or management position in EMS or a Fire / EMS service.
bulletScience Tract: For the student who desires a more rigorous knowledge of the physiology / pathophysiology of the human body with emphasis in sciences. Many students utilize this tract, with course revisions, as a pathway toward pre-medicine or pre-Physician Assistant.
