Kentucky Medication Administration Course

For Nurse Aides in Long-Term Care Facilities

This course is designed to prepare the Medicaid Nurse Aide to administer specific medications in a long-term care facility, as delegated and supervised by a licensed nurse.

Course Content

The course shall include basic principles, techniques and procedures of medication administration in accordance with established guidelines and requirements that direct the limited functions of the Kentucky Medication Aide.

Course Length

The Kentucky Medication Administration course consists of eighty (80) hours. Sixty (60) hours are spent in the classroom and laboratory followed by twenty (20) hours in a clinical practicum supervised by the instructor in a long term care facility.

After satisfactory completion of the course, the medication aide will be eligible to take the competency evaluation. After satisfactory completion of the competency evaluation, the Technical Institutions Branch of KCTCS will forward to the Division of Licensure and Regulations in the Cabinet For Human Resources the students name, address and social security number.

Student Qualifications

bulletHigh school diploma, G.E.D., or COMPASS test score at tenth (10) grade level in reading and math.
bulletA minimum of six months of work experience as a nurse aide in a health care facility within the last two (2) years.
bulletFor those nurse aides employed in health care facilities that may be exempt form OBRA nurse aide testing and training requirements, it is recommended that they meet all qualifications of the OBRA regulations prior to enrolling in the medication aide class.
