Information and Degree Requirements

The purpose of the curriculum is to provide learning experiences which help the student to develop as a registered nurse, as an individual, and as a citizen. The curriculum includes a broad liberal arts foundation and those courses and activities which are fundamental to the formulation of concepts and principles applicable to professional nursing. This course of study fosters development of self-direction, sensitivity, creativity, and leadership. The student is assisted to identify the health needs of people from an intercultural perspective, with emphasis on Southern Appalachia. The graduate is prepared to render entry level professional nursing service and pursue individual development and graduate education in an area of special interest. The Nursing program is accredited by the National League of Nursing and approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing.

The nursing major requires the completion of thirty-five (35) courses for graduation.

Requirements for Admission to the Nursing Major

Prior to admission to the nursing major, a student must have completed the following: 

1.Fifteen course credits. 
2.BIO 101 and 302 with a grade of C or better. 
3.NUR 300 and 341 with a grade of C or better.

Requirements for Continuation in the Major 

1.A grade of C or better in each required Nursing course and in each collateral course. 
2.A valid driver's license and Defensive Driving before enrolling in the sophomore spring term. 
3.In addition to completing specified course requirements, each student must satisfy departmental standards for effectiveness in written and oral communication.
4.Current immunications, proofs of immunity, and CPR certification.

Program for Individual Needs of Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors:

The Department of Nursing conducts a program of testing designed to prepare students for taking the National Council's Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to become registered nurses upon graduation from the nursing program. Students identified as having weak areas by these tests will be required to complete specified programs of review to overcome weaknesses. 

Requirements for B.S. Degree in Nursing 

1.Nursing Courses (14):300, 341, 342, 343, 344, 345, 346, 347, 348, 349, and 450. 
2.Collateral courses (8): CHM 113; BIO 101, 302, 307, 322; CFS 221; PSY 100; and SOC 100 or 110 or 220.
