Nurse Aide Program

The approved course is 75 hours in length, with 59 hours of classroom instruction and 16 hours of clinical instruction provided as mandated by Kentucky regulations.  After successfully completing an approved course in nurse aide training in Kentucky, individuals are eligible to take the competency examination for nurse aide registry in Kentucky.  Nurse aides are employed in a variety of health care facilities, including nursing facilities and hospitals.

Ashland Technical College provides state-approved courses for this type of training.  Courses are held on a regular basis, averaging one class per month.  Basic nursing topics, such as taking and recording vital signs, measuring and recording patient's height and weight, personal care skills and record keeping are presented during the course.  In addition to these topics, other areas of study include communication and interpersonal skills, infection control procedures, safety and emergency procedures and patient's rights.  The course is intended to train you for a wide variety of responsibilities that you would encounter in a nursing facility or hospital.  Classroom and laboratory instruction is held at the college and clinical activities are provided at various facilities around the area.

The fee for this course is $200.00.  There is also a fee for the textbook for the course, which is based on the current price of the book.  Potential students will also need to provide a white uniform, white leather shoes, a watch with a sweep second hand, a recent TB skin test on file and either proof of HBV vaccination or a waiver for that vaccination.  In addition, professional liability insurance is required of all students enrolled in the course.  This can be purchased at Ashland Technical College at a nominal fee. 

Competency testing for nurse aide registry is also done at Ashland Technical College. .  The examination consists of a written component designed to test the student's knowledge and a skills portion designed to test the student's abilities in a clinical situation.   Examinations are held on a regular basis, averaging one test per month.  Both the written and skills portion of the examination are held at our college.  Below are some guidelines used to determine who is qualified to take the competency examination.

bulletAny individual who has successfully completed nurse aide training in Kentucky is eligible to take the nurse aide competency examination.
bulletIf you are employed in a permanent position as a nurse aide, you must complete training and testing within 4 months of initial employment.
bulletIf you are not employed as a nurse aid, you must complete testing within one year of the completion of your nurse aide training.
bulletIf you have completed a nursing fundamentals course in either an LPN or RN program, you can take the examination without taking the nurse aide training course provided you take the examination within one year of the completion of the nursing fundamentals course.  A transcript showing that you have completed the fundamentals course must be brought with you to the examination
bulletIf you have been previously registered as a nurse aide but have let your registration lapse, you may take the written and skills portion of the competency examination without re-taking the course.  However, you may take the examination only one time.  If you fail the examination, you must complete the 75-hour course described earlier.  A letter from the Department of Medicaid Services is required as proof that you had previously been on the nurse aide registry.
